That’s right kids – it’s that time of the year where we’ll be jammin’ to the artists that we played last year. This will be our last ‘yearly’ post for independents as we’ll now be going to 2 times a year since you guys were so awesome and now we’re flooded with music!
Here’s a list of the artists played, followed by where in the world they are, followed by the name of the song. Please support any artists that you are interested in!
In this episode we’ll discuss current events, what’s Nate been listening to, independent music from Matter in the Medium from Ontario, CA and we’ll take a look at VH1’s list of bands or performers who should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame but never will be.

What’s Nate been listening to?
Artist: Beastie Boys
Notes: According to Mike Simpson, one half of the Dust Brothers (LA based producers famous for their sample based music): “We became obsessed with throwing eggs at people. The Beasties were staying at the Mondrian hotel, on the ninth floor. Summer was starting and everyday all these people would line up in front of the Comedy Store across the street. It was just open season. Eventually, they got a very diplomatic letter from the hotel management, like ‘We’ve had some reports of things falling out of your window. If there’s a problem with your window, please let us know.’ Then we started driving around in limos, throwing eggs at people. That’s how we came up with the song ‘Egg Man’.”
Known samples: Primary beat sample: “Sport” – Ligtnin’ Rod (1973). Bass line sample: “Superfly” – Curtis Mayfield (1972). Music sample at “I’m on the move”: “Dance to the Music” – Sly and the Family Stone (1968).
For those that might not know – Beastie Boys were a hardcore band before they started writing hip hop music. There is a line in Egg Man that came from one of their old songs called Egg Raid On Mojo. So, we will play both songs so you can hear what they were like as a punk band.
Album: Paul’s Boutique (Before sampling lawsuits, this album is chock full of samples) & Some Old Shit
Song: Egg Man & Egg Raid On Mojo

Someone made annotations for the whole Paul’s Boutique on this site. It’s pretty cool. Says where a lot of the samples are from and gives a lot of info on the references in the lyrics. Link above.
